Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Lauren did not believe him.

Not immediately.

Her father, William Whitmore, had been dead for eleven years.

He had adored Lauren.

He had respected Ethan.

But secret trusts and instructions to destroy companies sounded like something from another life, not the father Lauren remembered making pancakes on Sunday mornings.

Rebecca found the proof.

A recorded statement.

Lauren watched it alone.

Her father appeared on the screen, thinner than she remembered.

“Lauren,” he began, “if you're seeing this, something has gone wrong.”

Her breath caught.

He explained Northstar.

The shares.

The protections.

And Ethan.

“I’m trusting your husband because you trust him,” William said. “But the assets belong to you.”

Lauren paused the recording.

That sentence hurt.

Because her father’s entire plan had depended on something that no longer existed.

Her trust in Ethan.

When she resumed, William explained that Northstar could act as a defensive voting block if hostile investors ever targeted Cole Vector.

Ethan had been named temporary proxy.

Temporary.

Not permanent.

Lauren called him.

“Come over.”

He arrived twenty minutes later.

They sat across from each other at the kitchen table.

The same table where they had once discussed baby names.

Now a folder of evidence lay between them.

“You should have told me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

“At first, because your father asked me not to unless it became necessary.”

“And later?”

Ethan looked down.

“Because I liked having control.”

There it was.

Not an excuse.

The truth.

Lauren appreciated it almost as much as she hated it.

“Finally.”

“What?”

“An honest answer.”

He nodded.

“I became arrogant.”

“You became dishonest.”

“Yes.”

“And Madison?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“That was worse.”

“Why?”

“Because there’s no explanation that makes it acceptable.”

Lauren said nothing.

“I was scared,” he continued. “Helix was collapsing. The board was turning against me. Victoria was pressuring me. You were pregnant and working constantly, and every time I came home, I felt like I was bringing disaster through the door.”

“So you slept with Madison.”

“Yes.”

“That protected me how?”

“It didn't.”

“Good.”

Ethan looked up.

“Good?”

“You finally stopped pretending betrayal was sacrifice.”

He nodded slowly.

“You’re right.”

Lauren's eyes filled.

“I loved you, Ethan.”

“I love you.”

“That's not the same thing.”

“I know.”

She slid the Northstar proxy documents across the table.

“Sign control back to me.”

He didn't hesitate.

“Okay.”

“You’re not going to fight?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because they were always yours.”

Lauren watched him sign.

One document.

Then another.

With every signature, the power balance of their marriage changed.

When he finished, Ethan pushed the papers toward her.

“What happens now?”

“To Cole Vector?”

“To us.”

Lauren looked at her wedding ring on the counter.

“I don't know.”

It was the most honest answer she could give.

The shareholder meeting took place six days later.

Lauren entered Cole Vector headquarters wearing a cream maternity dress beneath a dark blazer.

People stared.

Most employees had never seen the founder’s wife attend a board meeting.

Few knew she controlled enough shares to change the company’s future.

Victoria sat at one end of the table.

Ethan sat at the other.

Madison participated remotely from the hospital.

Rebecca sat beside Lauren.

The chairman cleared his throat.

“We’re here to vote on the restructuring proposal.”

“No,” Lauren said.

Every face turned.

“We’re here to discuss forged documents.”

Silence.

Rebecca distributed copies.

One board member went pale.

Lauren noticed.

Robert Kane.

Chief financial officer.

Ethan noticed too.

Rebecca continued.

“Forensic analysis determined that Dr. Cole’s electronic signature was applied from a terminal inside Cole Vector’s finance department.”

Kane stood.

“This is absurd.”

“Sit down,” Lauren said.

He stared at her.

She did not blink.

He sat.

Rebecca displayed login records.

Then security footage.

At 11:42 p.m., three months earlier, Robert Kane entered Ethan’s office.

He used Ethan’s computer.

He accessed Northstar documents.

And he submitted the forged amendment.

Victoria looked stunned.

Ethan looked furious.

Kane pushed back from the table.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

Lauren said, “Actually, I do.”

“You’re going to destroy this company.”

“No. I’m going to find out what you did to it.”

Kane laughed.

“Your husband already destroyed it.”

Ethan stood.

“Enough.”

“No, Ethan,” Lauren said.

She looked at Kane.

“Let him talk.”

Kane smiled.

“Helix never worked at scale.”

Lauren knew that.

“Investors would have pulled out.”

“Yes.”

“So you falsified revenue.”

“I stabilized revenue.”

“You lied.”

“I bought time.”

Lauren almost laughed.

Everyone in Ethan’s world seemed to have a prettier word for dishonesty.

“Did Ethan know?”

Kane looked at him.

“Eventually.”

Lauren turned toward Ethan.

He didn't deny it.

Her heart sank.

“You knew.”

“Three months ago.”

“And didn't report it.”

“I was gathering evidence.”

Kane laughed.

“He was protecting himself.”

“Maybe,” Lauren said. “But that doesn't protect you.”

Kane's smile disappeared.

Rebecca closed the folder.

“Federal authorities have already received copies.”

The room exploded.

Kane stood.

Victoria demanded explanations.

Board members shouted.

Ethan said nothing.

Lauren remained seated.

Then pain ripped across her abdomen.

She gasped.

Everything stopped.

“Lauren?”

Ethan was beside her instantly.

Another pain came.

Harder.

Lauren gripped the table.

“No.”

She was only thirty-two weeks pregnant.

“Call 911,” Ethan shouted.

“I’m a doctor.”

“And right now you’re a patient.”

Her water broke.

The room went silent.

Ethan dropped to his knees beside her.

Lauren looked into his terrified eyes.

“She's too early.”

“I know.”

“Ethan.”

“I’m here.”

For once, there was no company.

No affair.

No money.

No lies.

Only two frightened parents and a baby who had chosen the worst possible moment to enter the world.

Lauren was rushed to the same hospital where she had saved Madison.

But this time she wasn't wearing scrubs.

She was in the bed.

And Ethan was running beside her.
