The Name Missing from the Drawing
Helen · For my granddaughter, starting her first job Fictional narrator · 2 min read
At my retirement dinner, they projected the drawing that made my career. I could see the empty space where another woman’s name should have been.
The project was a neighborhood library. I was the lead architect; Anita was a junior colleague who noticed that our proposed entrance would leave parents struggling with strollers on the steps. Her revised approach changed the whole building.

I presented the design. The magazine quoted me. When the article arrived, she said it looked wonderful. I accepted that as permission to leave things alone. I was busy, and pleased with myself, and more responsible for the omission than I wanted to admit.
Years later, a young employee asked how I had thought of the entrance. I told her about Anita. She asked why that was not in the project notes. There was no impressive answer.
I called Anita before the retirement dinner and asked whether I could credit her publicly. She agreed, after a silence I deserved. We corrected the firm’s project history. At the dinner I used part of my speech to tell the story, naming the work she had done. An apology did not return those missing years of recognition.
This old drawing is on my desk today. I want you to know that I loved my work and made good things, but that pride can make a person careless with someone else’s contribution. When you sign your first project, look at who is standing beside you.
The memory behind itAn early architectural drawing with its contributors finally recorded.

Keep your project private, or discuss publishing your written story, your film, or both.
2
Agree before publication
Review a separate agreement and decide whether to accept it. Nothing is published without your permission.
3

You can decide then.
